Computer Science students make it to Round 2 of the Imagine CupTwo teams involving MSc students in the Department of Computer Science have been selected by a judging panel as two of only six teams to continue to Round 2 of the Imagine Cup, a premier student technology competition run by Microsoft for the eighth time this year. The team that comes out on top wins a trip to the world finals in Warsaw, Poland. With their entry to the Software Design competition, Monica Abrudan, Tiago Espinha and Jamal Kaabi were right on target with respect to the theme of this year's competition: "Imagine a world where technology helps solve the toughest problems." Their innovative ideas may lead to a clever software solution that can help reduce CO2 emissions caused by air travel. "I am veeeeery happy and looking forward to start the implementation of the project," Monica commented euphorically after learning about the team's success in Round 1. The hard work really starts now: Team WeWin, as the three students have chosen to name their team in anticipation of things to come, will have to implement the proposed software solution using latest technologies and prepare a convincing demo and presentation that can wow the judges at the national finals in April. The second team, called MindPoint, has another of our MSc students, Raya Yunakova, Kiril Rusev (who studies in the School of Management), and Nikola Kosev and Dilyan Rusev (both studying in Bulgaria). They are entering in the competition for the second time, after having won the Software Design finals in Bulgaria last year. Their product, called Envision, is an educational system aimed at solving the two main problems in primary education – the insufficiency of resources in schools and the low motivation for studying in students. It provides teachers with a powerful tool to make their classes more interesting, while engaging all students in the learning process and reducing the required investment for IT equipment. |
