25 years of Computer Science at Leicester

Introduction

On the afternoon of Tuesday 13th March there will be a series of talks and other events celebrating the 25th anniversary of the establishment of Computer Science at Leicester. The afternoon will culminate in the annual Faculty of Science lecture which will be given by Professor Kevin Warwick of the University of Reading.

We are very pleased that Kevin Warwick has agreed to give the Faculty Lecture this year; he is well known as an excellent speaker and his work impinges on many aspects of science.

In addition to the Faculty Lecture, we are organizing a programme of events during the afternoon. The talks should be accessible to anyone with some general knowledge of computing and everyone is most welcome at all the events. The individual events listed below are independent of each other - so you can arrive or leave at whatever times suit you!

From 14.30 to 15.30 there will be a session reflecting on the history of Computer Science at Leicester and on some of the research undertaken here. The speakers will be Rick Thomas (who has recently completed 20 years service at Leicester) and Iain Stewart (formerly professor of Computer Science at Leicester, now a professor at the University of Durham).

Location: Physics Lecture Theatre B.

From 15.30 to 16.30 there will be a talk on The equations of Computer Science by John Tucker, Professor of Computer Science at the University of Swansea.

Location: Physics Lecture Theatre B.

From 16.30 to 17.30 there will be refreshments and also an exhibition showing some features of the history of Computer Science at Leicester; this is open to everyone and will give all visitors a chance to socialize and meet members of the department here.

Location: CW2 Belvoir Park Lounge.

Then, from 17.30 to 18.30, there will be two events in parallel.

One session will contain two short talks about aspects of Computer Science related to research currently being done in the Department. These will be:

  • Inside Google: the Algorithmic Money-Spinner — Rajeev Raman (one of the professors in the Department);
  • Upgrading the Web: Software Services — Stephen Gorton (a Leicester Computer Science graduate and one of our current PhD students).

Location: Bennett Lecture Theatre 5.

These talks will not assume any specific prior knowledge and would (for example) be very suitable for sixth formers who might want to hear about some other interesting aspects of the subject in addition to those covered in the Faculty Lecture.

The other session from 17.30 to 18.30 will be an Industry Session where we will present some of our research, discuss opportunities for student placements and projects, and give an overview of professional training offered by the department. This session will be geared to IT professionals, including former students working in this general area.

Location: CW2 Belvoir Park Lounge.

The Faculty Lecture will follow at 19.00.

If you are able to come, could you please e-mail us at

telling us which sessions you would like to attend (including your postal address in the message). Unfortunately the Faculty Lecture is now fully booked.
