Waders at the Ami-coast of Kasumigaura: April 19, 1998,


Weather: blue sky, quite warm (20-25) and hardly any wind. Visibility over the whole width of the lake.
  1. Little grebe Podiceps ruficollis [Kaitsuburi] At least 30 ex. Sometimes in groups.
  2. Great Cormorant Phalacrocorax carbo [Kawa-u] At least 3.
  3. Spot-billed duck Anas poecilorhyncha [Karu-gamo] At least 50.
  4. Mallard Anas Platyrhynchos [Ma-gamo] At least 30 ex.
  5. Northern Shoveler Anas clypeata [Hashibiro-gamo] At least 200 ex.
  6. Green-winged Teal Anas crecca crecca [Ko-gamo] At least 400.
  7. Falcated Teal Anas falcata [Yoshi-gamo] At least 55 ex.
  8. Eurasian Wigeon Anas penelope [Hidori-gamo] At least 900.
  9. Black-headed Gull Larus ridibundus [Yuri-kamome] At least 80 ex.
  10. Herring gull Larus argentatus [Seguro-kamome] 1 ex.
  11. Cattle egret Bubulcus ibis [Ama-sagi] 1 ex.
  12. Little egret Egretta garzetta [Ko-sagi] 3 ex.
  13. Intermediate egret Egretta intermedia [Chuu-sagi] 12 ex.
  14. Great egret Egretta alba [Dai-sagi] 1 ex.
  15. Coot Fulica atra [Ou-ban] At least 15 ex.
  16. Common Gallinule Gallinula chloropus [Ban] 4 ex.
  17. Water rail Rallus aquaticus [Kuina] 1 ex calling.
  18. Little ringed plover Charadrius dubius [Kochidori] At least 11 ex.
  19. Lesser golden plover Pluvialis dominica [Munaguro] Almost 200, at 7 different locations,
  20. Wood sandpiper Tringa glareola [Takabu-shigi] 5 ex.
  21. Common snipe Gallinago gallinago [Ta-shigi] At least 25 ex. 2 ex seemed slightly smaller, less yellowish and showed a more finer detailed coloration of the feathers. Perhaps Pintail snipes?
  22. Painted snipe Rostratula benghalensis [Tama-shigi] One female and one male. Not calling. At first walking on top of a rather wet grassy field, later on feeding on adjacent wet not yet planted ricepaddy, seeking cover of the low embankment. Same spot where on April 20 last year we could hear a calling female.
  23. Rufous turtle dove Streptopelia orientalis [Kiji-bato] Few.
  24. Skylark Alauda arvensis [Hibari] Could be heard at many places. At least 30 ex.
  25. Barn swallow Hirundo rustica [Tsubame] Nesting in the village at the end of the Hanamura river. At least 20 hunting over the reedbeds of Kasumiguara.
  26. Japanese wagtail Motacilla grandis [Seguro-sekirei] Several.
  27. Water pipit Anthus spinoletta [Tahibari] At least 30.
  28. Brown-eared bulbul Hypsipetes amaurotis [Hiyodori] Several.
  29. Dusky thrush Turdus naumanni [Tsugumi] At many places, at least 80 ex.
  30. Bush warbler Cettia diphone [Uguisu] At least 10 ex calling.
  31. Fan-tailed warbler Cisticola juncidis [Sekka] At least 8 ex calling.
  32. Great reed warbler Acrocephalus arundinaceus [Ou-yoshikiri]6 ex calling.
  33. Siberian meadow bunting Emberiza cioides [Hoojiro] 1 ex. singing.
  34. Reed Bunting Emberiza schoeniclus [Ou-jurin] 2 ex.
  35. Oriental greenfinch Carduelis sinica [Kawarahiwa] Group of 30 ex.
  36. Tree sparrow Passer montanus [Suzume] At least 20 ex.
  37. Gray starling Sturnus cineraceus [Mukudori] Everywhere, at least 200 ex. Later on apparently roosting in the reed.
  38. Jungle crow Corvus macrorhynchos [Hashibuto-garasu] 3 ex.
