Hello Kantorians,

We expected February to be more-or-less identical to January in terms of birds, and until today (February 28) it was. But after our usual visit to the duckpond this morning (where an American Tundra Swan (C. c. columbianis) took up residence the other day), we were sitting at home eating breakfast, trying to decide where to go, unaware that we were squandering time out of what would turn out to be a "Big Day". Two hours later, we were driving our usual route up the coast, and were happy to discover that the warm weather (which had started sometime in the third week of the month and continues now) had melted enough snow to open up several previously inaccessible back roads, and had also melted some small areas of the large lakes, which had become populated with a good variety of waterfowl. Unfortunately, the winter finches had completely disappeared; we couldn't even find an Oriental Greenfinch! But in spite of this, we wound up seeing or hearing what I thought was an amazing number of species (considering date and location) for the day - 70.

The highlights were all 4 loons (the single Yellow-billed at close range, molting into alternate plumage), all 5 grebes, both sea-eagles (a single adult Steller's on the ice of Ogawara-Ko), well over a thousand White-fronted Geese (which presumably had quit Izu-numa early) and nearly every species of waterfowl we'd ever seen in Japan.

There many (other) signs of Spring. Black-tailed Gulls have returned in immaculate plumage, and most of the adult Slaty-backed Gulls have shed their winter head streaking. Pochards are departing in flocks, and being replaced by more by the next morning (or is it the same birds returning?). Tits are singing, woodpeckers are drumming, and Gray Starlings, present all winter in flocks, are now exclusively in pairs. Dusky Thrushes have descended from the trees, and are now feeding on the exposed ground near the edges of thawing ice and snow.

We interrupted February with a short trip to Hokkaido, and have included species seen only there this month on the list below prefixed by an asterisk (*). Otherwise, all observations are from the most northeasterly 90 km of Honshu coastline (between Hachinohe and Shiriyazaki), all essentially at sea-level. A preceding '-' indicates 5 or less individuals seen during the month, while '+' indicates 100 or more. Maximize the size of your mail window to view this message in a reasonable format.
