Pallas's Leaf Warbler

At about 10:00 this morning (Sept. 26, 1998), at Shiriyazaki, I saw a Pallas's Leaf Warbler (Phylloscopus proregulus, Karafuto-mushikui).

My only reference on the status of this species in Japan (WBSJ's FG to Birds of Japan) indicates this is a rarity in Japan. Perhaps it has been seen more often in the last 16 years.

The bird was associating with Eastern Crowned Warblers (Phylloscopus occipitalis, Sendai-mushikui), and Olive Tree Pipits (Anthus hodgsoni, Binzui). It fed exclusively in pines. I had several good views of all important features, but the bird was very active and did not allow a photo.

ON Hegura in fall, I have only seen this species one, compared to dozens of Yellow-browed Warblers (Kimayu-mushikui). I have never seen Eastern Crowned Warbler (Sendai mushikui) on Hegura in fall!

Ja hoor en de fotos waren niet zo best, maar wel gelukt. Ik heb er een stuk of drie gezien op Hegura en verder natuurlijk een aantal in nederland, maar het blijft een feest van een beest(je).

The warbler was in nearly pure coastal pine forest (Japanese Red Pine, I think?).
