In and around Tsukuba in Ibaraki-ken

Some bird observations by Fer-Jan de Vries.

Since July 1 1996, I live in Tsukuba, a rather new city with many research institutes some 50 kilometer north-east of Tokyo. For a nice map featuring relevant birding spot of the surrounding prefecture Ibaraki, click here. In this list I collect my observations from all over Ibaraki prefecture.

The area around Tsukuba is rather flat, but for Tsukuba-san, the mountain some 20 km north of the city. The soil seems to consist of sand, mainly, still it allows for some rice farming, a different dry species. Some 6km to the east there is a large lake, Kasumigaura. It used to be directly connected to the Pacific via the Hitachi-tone river. Sluices built in the sixties blocked this entirely. In winter time it is splendid lake for thousands of waterbirds, it is a pity that boatracing is allowed. For instance, the site near Edosaki which is recognised as a place where Bean geese winter is also a site for the motorboat lovers. Given the efforts that the prefectural goverment makes to clean and improve the lake, I would recommend to restrict the motor boats to only certain areas of the lake. Waterbirds need a quiet place. Hunting should be restricted as well... The lake has sufficiently value to be worth to protect it!

The coastline of Ibaraki consists mainly of sandbeaches, but for two rocky outcrops: the coast along Mito (Oarai and Nakaminato) and Choosi. North of Mito are two swan ponds, Kotoku-numa and the pond in Naka-town. South of Mito is the beautiful lake Hinuma.

West and south from Tsukuba there are a number of big rivers: the Kokaigawa and the Tonegawa.

Starting from July 1, 1996 until now.
