2nd year students, module choices for 3rd year

This is a page for 2nd year students in 2018/19, who plan to choose 3rd year modules for 2019/20. It will also be useful for students in 2018/19 who are planning on taking a year out (e.g. with industry), especially if they fail to obtain a placement.

Introduction to the module choice process

The process for choosing your 3rd year modules is roughly as follows:

  • Student attends the module choices session; asks any questions they have
  • Student receives email from registry asking them to choose their module options by using an online system (which opens on 4th March and closes on 17th)
  • Student completes module registration by indicating which modules they want to take

There is some additional information if you are a computing with management student, or if you are with-industry, or study abroad. See the relevant "appendix" section below.

Module choices session

During this session, convenors will give short introductions to their modules. All students are strongly encouraged to attend.

The session is the "student support workshop" on:

Thu Feb 28 at 09:00, in RAT LT

If you are a student, this session should already be in your personal calendar.

The recording of the session should be available on Panopto, at the following link:

Let me know if you have problems accessing the recording.

Questions that students might like to ask about modules

  • What is the module about, and who is the lecturer? What is the lecturer like? What style are his/her lectures?

  • What is the motivation for studying the module?

  • How easy is the module?

  • Does the module have lots of maths?

  • Does the module have lots of programming? If so, what language is used?

  • What is the assessment pattern for the module? (especially, is there a lot of coursework, or is it class tests and exams)

  • What is the student satisfaction like?

  • Is the material useful "in the real world", for jobs etc?

  • What tools/languages/technologies are introduced in the module?

  • Does the module have pre-requisites? If so, what are they?

Computing with Management students

Please note that Management usually have a shorter timeframe than this; please be aware that you may need to make your choices earlier. There are separate sessions on Management options organised by the School of Management which you should also attend. Please email the professional services staff on ulsb@le.ac.uk for details.

With-industry or study abroad students

Students who are currently in the second year and are registered on the with industry/study abroad programmes will not be registering their module choices now using the online system, regardless whether you will actually go away next year (the system does not know whether you will eventually get a placement, for example).

Those who indeed will be away next year will make your module selections this time next year. However note the information session above, which you should probably attend this time rather than next year.

Those who are uncertain whether you will get a placement should still stay on your current degree, and hence will not make your module choices, until the situation becomes clear.

When it eventually becomes clear a placement cannot be found or for those who want go back to the normal 3-year programme anyway, you should then complete a Change of Degree programme paper form (available from http://www.le.ac.uk/sas/courses/transfercourse). You will choose your third year modules by writing them down on the form. The form should be submitted to the department office.

Students who are currently away on placement / studying abroad should use the online module registration, just like other students about to enter the third year.
